FISH POND CONSTRUCTION AT WAKISO CHILD HOPE PRIMARY SCHOOL-BULABAKULU

INTRODUCTION
The project will be located on the Eastern Valley from the school campus about 100metres on a gentle slope towards the swamps. The swamp will act as the main source of natural water to the pond. Even before tossing the life support of this water, it had already wild fish in its streams.

The pond will be in a rectangular shape parallel to the stream (21metres x 15) ?315m2 and it will accommodate about 8000 fishes. Type of fish preferred will be Tilapia, Mirror carp and cut fish.

Physical development will involve de-earthening the slope to the level of the stream flow which it the highest point is about 1 metre of earth. After that, excavating the pond will take place, with demarcations leaving 3 metres from the stream for earth barrier / Crown East ward. A three metres – 1.5 metre will be left for the hip of soil (Pond Crown). From that 1.5 metre will be left for the Dyke, and 60cm will be left for the pond foot i.e small sloppy space touching water and the dyke.

Then the pond will be excavated, the above features rotate through the pond rectangle.

Water source inlet will be located near the swamp stream water source this will be joined using O PVC plastic pipe of about 5 metres with and adjacent vertical pipe making a laying “L”. A smaller pipe will be connected at the outlet.

Sixteen Manual labour will be required to complete this work in 3 weeks

After pond construction, it will be fertilized using decompose cow dung of about 250 kg. but initially the school will establish a potato plantation, bean garden, a soya bean garden, maize garden, and millet if possible. These will serve as manual source for the pond plus formulated feeds.

CHRONOLOGICAL
ACTIVITIES ON THE POND
1.	Clearing all grass land from the pond locality to eliminate cover and access for predators e.g snakes and wild birds
2.	Leveling the land. This will involve excavating earth from the slope to make it flat. It will be approximately 1m on the highest side. Heap of this earth will be along the 3m stretch between the pond crown and the stream (Giving water barrier)
3.	The excavation process of the pond will begin at the pond centre- Earth will be dumped along the 1.5m space left for the pond crown.
4.	1.5m will be left for the dyke, and 50 or 60cm will be left for the pond foot slanting between the dyke and the water. This and the above procedures encircle the rectangle.
5.	Pond inlet. From the pond inlet, depth will be 1m and gaining depth to 1.5m towards the outlet. Water circulation is by natural gradient.

EXPECTED RESULTS
1.	Short term
Children will have to feed on fish after six months of its maturity (if we rare the Mirror carp).

2.	Long-Term
A fish farming skills will be attached to the school programe.

3.	Expected Social effects.
The near by community will benefit from the skills organized by the school for their economic and nutritional value.
It begins affordable animal proteins to the people.

This is going to be amazing... such a great idea for that eyesore of an old swimming pool. I have a particular hatred of that old pool because it stabbed me in the foot with a rusty nail after I surgically removed a wooden growth from its flank. However, those two boas seemed to like it.
